Behind the photographs
People, places and small details
On the street, I’m interested in how people fit into their surroundings: a figure caught in a pool of light, a glance towards the camera, or a passer-by lining up with a picture on a wall. The setting often matters as much as the person.
I also look at the city without people in the frame. Weathered walls, reflections and everyday objects show a different side of a place. Hanging washing or a pair of discarded trousers can be as much a subject as a building.
There’s room to experiment, too. For Skaters, Bristol, I held a honeycomb filter in front of the lens, letting its pattern become part of the image. That experiment sits alongside the more direct observations in this collection.
